How to Make a Cutout Collage in Photoshop | Adobe Creative Cloud

Mix backgrounds, textures, and photos to create a fashion collage.

Start from scratch, or download practice files [https://adobe.ly/34LoypJ] for a head start. Steps below.

Prep your files:

1. Open the cutout-collage_practice.psd file in Photoshop (File – Open).
2. Drag the foil texture image from your computer onto the red background.
3. Drag a corner handle to resize as necessary.
4. Hold the cursor just outside a corner handle and drag to rotate it.
5. Press Enter or Return to place it.

Isolate the subject:

1. Drag the image of the model from your computer on top of the foil texture. Press Enter or Return.
2. Choose the Quick Selection tool then click Select Subject from the Options bar at the top.
3. Click Select and Mask.
4. Choose the Quick Select tool in the Select and Mask workspace and set it to Subtract.
5. Paint over the larger remaining areas of the background.

Tip: Use the [ ] keys on your keyboard to resize the brush as you work.

6. Select the Refine Edge brush in the Select and Mask workspace.
7. Brush around the fuzzy areas on the edges of the model’s hair and sweater.
8. Choose Output to Selection at the bottom of the Select and Mask Properties panel. Click OK.

Create a stylized drop shadow:

1. Click the Add Layer Mask button on the Layers panel.
2. Right-click on the layer mask (black and white thumbnail on the layer) and select Add Mask to Selection.
3. Choose Select – Modify – Smooth and set the Sample Radius to 10 px. Click OK.
4. Click create new fill or adjustment layer from the bottom of the Layers panel.
5. Choose Solid Color and select white from the Color Picker. Click OK.
6. Use the Move (V) tool to drag and offset the white selection down and to the right.
7. Drag the white fill layer down so it appears behind the model.

Apply finishing touches:

1. Click the mask on the color fill layer.
2. Choose the Brush (B) tool set it to black.
3. Paint over the areas of the drop shadow that need to be cleaned up.
4. Select the model layer.
5. Choose the Quick Selection tool and brush over the body to select it.
6. Click create new fill or adjustment layer from the bottom of the Layers panel.
7. Choose Solid Color and use the Eyedropper tool to select the red behind the model. Click OK.
8. Click the mask on the new color fill layer.
9. Choose the Brush tool, set it to white, and brush along the edges to clean up the silhouette.
